ClickZ: Marketers Call for a Reality Check in Female-Targeted Campaigns

On September 18, 2013, there was a gathering of the minds at the Beverly Hills Hotel on how to best market to women now. The purchasing power of women has skyrocketed. But how and when you talk to the modern female consumer is much different than it was just a few years ago. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach.

How do you make sure you’re talking to her at the right time, in the right place and, most importantly, with the right message? At the Marketing to Women Now breakfast, we heard from industry, agency and client-side experts on this ever-evolving marketing landscape and how brands are successfully tapping into the ever-evolving female consumer…

Jackie Stasi and Karen Kovacs: Women+Mobile: The Unbreakable Bond

  • Women have a love affair with their mobile device
  • The #1 word in the word cloud poll for women at the breakfast on how you feel about your phone was "dependent"
  • There are 4 rules of engagement for mobile ads:
    • Ask permission
    • Share her interest
    • Look your best
    • Engage her in conversation

Catherine Balsam Schwaber: The Curve Films: Indie Woman

  • The biggest group of women now is single women without kids – 36.7M
  • Seismic shifts on the traditional family. There are working mothers, stay home dads, adult kids at home, etc.
  • Short form entertainment content has to change for women. Need to create emotional connections and experiences for them. Ex. Top Shop using Chirp for augmented reality during Fashion Week.

Creative panel discussion with Linda Landers/Girlpower Marketing, Karen Costello/Deutsch LA, and Patrick O’Neill/ TBWA\CHIAT\DAY LA:

  • It's hard to portray the perfect mom. They are not one-size-fits-all. Don’t show the cliché. It's best to avoid it and just tell a great story.
  • Linda Landers good creative example: VW's Darth Vader commercial. (see video)
  • Karen Kovacs' good creative example: their Target spot which focused on education. (see video)
  • Patrick's good creative example: Kraft Zesty campaign. They thought about trends, mom, and the visual (see video).
  • Only 3% of creative ad execs are women. It’s a multi-faceted issue. There are lots of reasons why, and it's a real problem.

Gaming Breakfast 2013

On August 21, 2013, ThinkLA hosted its annual Gaming Breakfast at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza with over 300 people in attendance. Our speakers and panelists spoke about the current state of the gaming industry, providing astounding statistics on gamers and gaming behavior, as well as marketing case studies.

The main take-away from the event? As one journalist put it:
Games are more popular than ever across consoles, PCs, tablets, and smartphones. If you’re a marketer and not taking the gaming phenomenon seriously, you’d better look at some cold, hard facts. Of all smartphone users, 39 percent play games at least once per week, and 15 to 20 percent of users are playing for a significant amount of time. (Marlo, J., 2013, August 23, iMedia Connection)

The consensus on our first ThinkLA Conversations?

"engaging convo” - @LoyolaMarymount
"great event” - @phenomblue
"excellent panel” "P.S. @kuhn and @jacobwe have great socks” - @lanarushing
"I'm digging @jacobe point of view.” @marianthomas12
"such an informative event.” - @lupowolf

On July 31, 2013, we put two well-known media publishers in the hot seat in a first-of-its-kind, town hall format with ThinkLA Conversations.

ThinkLA was very excited to host the event at LMU, bringing members of the L.A. media, marketing and advertising community together to share their thoughts about online journalism, state of digital advertising, social interactions and activation, listicles, and more. Taking the stage was the always-opinionated Nick Denton, Founder/Publisher of Gawker, and media savvy Jacob Weisberg, Chairman of Slate.com, moderated by Eric Kuhn, Head of Social Media at UTA. The LA marketing community in attendance really challenged our speakers, which made for an engaging and insightful conversation.

Here are a few of our favorite tweets from the event…

Save the Surf 2013

Posted By Administration, Sunday, May 12, 2013

On Saturday, May 11th, over 150 people from the L.A. marketing and advertising community gathered to give back and help clean up the Santa Monica Beach. Attendees also got the chance to learn to surf or strike a yoga pose. Our philanthropic partner, Surfrider Foundation, educated us about the problems our ocean and beaches are facing and what we can do to protect them. Because of everyone’s volunteer efforts, 172lbs of debris was removed from the beach in just four hours. The majority of the waste comprised of small, seemingly insignificant pieces of trash - cigarette butts, straws, bottle caps, lighters, handfuls of deteriorating foam, candy wrappers, and thousands of indistinguishable fragments of micro-plastic. To learn more about all the good work that the Surfrider Foundation is doing, please visit http://www.surfrider.org/.

Many thanks to our sponsors!

Automotive Breakfast 2013

What were the top takeaways from the Automotive Breakfast?

  • The combination of a space shuttle and zombies is a supernatural phenomenon. The Toyota Tundra Endeavour and the Zombie edition of Hyundai Elantra made a rare appearance at our breakfast.
  • Jack Hollis, VP of Marketing at Toyota, shared how Toyota is *connecting* in new ways and delivering on their "Let’s Go Places” campaign.
  • David Angelo of David&Goliath (Kia account) proved how *like-mindedness* and having the right partners, like Blake Griffin, are key to success. Be brave. All cylinders should fire!
  • Initiative's Fred Sattler (Hyundai account) showed us how having a branded content and integration checklist is important.
