Emerging Directors Showcase Announces Winners


Los Angeles, CA (November 07, 2013) – The One Club, producers of the prestigious One Show Awards, in partnership withThinkLA, announced today the winners for the 2013 Emerging Directors Showcase, a competition celebrating the best directors in the early stages of their careers. Hundreds of emerging directors from 13 countries entered the inaugural competition.

Seven winners emerged, following a round of judging conducted by an accomplished jury of directors, including Man of Steel director, Zack Snyder.

The winners are as follows:

  • Isaiah Seret won in the Broadcast category for "Take the Stage.” Client: Adidas; agency: Sid Lee; production company: PRETTYBIRD.
  • Brandon LaGankewon in the Web Video/Film category for "A Ticket to Visit Mum.” Client: British Airways; agency: Ogilvy New York; production companies: US: Eyepatch NY, India: Little Lamb Films.
  • John X. Carey won in the Branded Short Films category for "Real Beauty Sketches.” Client: Dove; agency: Ogilvy Sao Paolo; production company: Tool of North America.
  • Alec Helm won in the PSA Category for "Kenya Bucket List.” Client: Water is Life; agency: DDB New York; production company: Tool of North America.
  • Corydon Wagner won in the Spec Commercial category for "Capture the Wind.” Client: GE; freelance.
  • AG Rojas won in the Artistic Film category for "Hey Jane.” Client: Spiritualized; record labels: Fat Possum, Double Six, Domino; production company: Caviar Content.
  • Denis Parchow won in the Student Film category for "Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.” Client: Steiff; student at Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg.


"We were very impressed with the quality of entrants for the Emerging Directors Showcase,” said Michael Nadeau, Managing Director of The One Club West. "The one thread that ran through all of the winning work, across all categories, whether the piece was commissioned or non-commissioned, for a brand or an artistic endeavor, was a deep understanding of what resonates with audiences on a visceral level.”

On October 3, 2013, ThinkLA hosted its annual Motor City West summit at the Automobile Driving Museum. In front of a full house of 450+ people, we heard from two OEMs, got a first look at a connected car, learned the essentials of big data and privacy, and found out how to stay culturally relevant. Here are the main takeaways from the summit…

  • VIBE is a measure of cultural traction for brands. It stands for visionary inspiring, bold, exciting.
  • When using the VIBE measurement Tesla scored the highest VIBE, beating out Apple brand.

Kimberlin Cranford, Senior Privacy Specialist & Attorney, Acxiom Corporation

  • It’s important to be proactive instead of reactive in privacy and data and how you serve up ads.
  • Legislators are focused on data right now. What may come out of Washington is something that may not be applicable to the auto industry. The key for all businesses is to be aware, be transparent and self-regulate.

Kimberley Gardiner, National Digital Marketing & Social Media Manager, Toyota Motor Sales

  • For car shopping, consumers want the process to be seamless, social and flexible.
  • Toyota is partnering with g+ hangout on a new car configurator called "Toyota Collaborator,” which allows your friends to help you with your car design and purchasing decisions.

Russell Wager, VP of Marketing, Mazda North American Operations

  • Mazda’s media strategy is an always on approach, with a greater presence in digital and more consistency in broadcast too.
  • In launching Mazda3, they built up buzz by inviting media and consumers to a party, but didn’t tell them what it was for. On the same day and time, they unveiled the Mazda3 with a live performance by the band Metric.
  • Was the Mazda3 launch successful? Yes, they became the news with 850M impressions, 500k video views and 100% share of voice. It was game changing.

LOS ANGELES, CA, September 27, 2013ThinkLA, the largest advertising industry organization for Southern California, held their annual AdJam: Battle of the Agency Bands on Thursday night at LA Live’s Club Nokia. About 1,500 guests watched LA’s most musically talented from the LA advertising and marketing community bring down the house. There were just two caveats. Each band had 12 minutes on stage and had to sing songs from this Millennium: 2000-2012. Click here to read more

But how and when you talk to the modern female consumer is much different than it was just a few years ago. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach.

How do you make sure you’re talking to her at the right time, in the right place and, most importantly, with the right message? At the Marketing to Women Now breakfast, we heard from industry, agency and client-side experts on this ever-evolving marketing landscape and how brands are successfully tapping into the ever-evolving female consumer…



Jackie Stasi and Karen Kovacs: Women+Mobile: The Unbreakable Bond

  • Women have a love affair with their mobile device
  • The #1 word in the word cloud poll for women at the breakfast on how you feel about your phone was "dependent"
  • There are 4 rules of engagement for mobile ads:
    • Ask permission
    • Share her interest
    • Look your best
    • Engage her in conversation

Catherine Balsam Schwaber: The Curve Films: Indie Woman

  • The biggest group of women now is single women without kids – 36.7M
  • Seismic shifts on the traditional family. There are working mothers, stay home dads, adult kids at home, etc.
  • Short form entertainment content has to change for women. Need to create emotional connections and experiences for them. Ex. Top Shop using Chirp for augmented reality during Fashion Week.

Creative panel discussion with Linda Landers/Girlpower Marketing, Karen Costello/Deutsch LA, and Patrick O’Neill/ TBWA\CHIAT\DAY LA:

  • It's hard to portray the perfect mom. They are not one-size-fits-all. Don’t show the cliché. It's best to avoid it and just tell a great story.
  • Linda Landers good creative example: VW's Darth Vader commercial. (see video)
  • Karen Kovacs' good creative example: their Target spot which focused on education. (see video)
  • Patrick's good creative example: Kraft Zesty campaign. They thought about trends, mom, and the visual (see video).
  • Only 3% of creative ad execs are women. It’s a multi-faceted issue. There are lots of reasons why, and it's a real problem.

On August 21, 2013, ThinkLA hosted its annual Gaming Breakfast at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza with over 300 people in attendance. Our speakers and panelists spoke about the current state of the gaming industry, providing astounding statistics on gamers and gaming behavior, as well as marketing case studies.

The main take-away from the event? As one journalist put it:
Games are more popular than ever across consoles, PCs, tablets, and smartphones. If you’re a marketer and not taking the gaming phenomenon seriously, you’d better look at some cold, hard facts.
