Michelle Garakian currently serves as the Assistant Executive Director- Policy, Education and Outreach City for the Los Angeles Department of Cannabis Regulation (DCR)
In this role, she works with the Executive Director of DCR to craft and track policy that will support the high-growth cannabis industry, manage and implement the Social Equity Program, liaise with the city partners, community and industry and manage DCR’s Policy and Community Engagement team
Ms. Garakian previously served as Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Director of Legislative Policy where she helped develop and implement a comprehensive approach to the Mayor’s legislative agenda, with particular focus on the LA City Council. Prior to this role, she was the Mayor’s Director of Business Development where she lead his business team who worked to find business solutions, big and small, to various challenges and turns lessons learned into macro business policy to enhance the City’s economy.
Ms. Garakian is the former Vice President for the Los Angeles Business Council (LABC), a prominent business organization that advocates on behalf of economic and environmental sustainability. Ms. Garakian coordinated all legislative and policy activities and administrated the Council’s successful marquee Summits, forums and workshops.
Prior to joining the LABC, Ms. Garakian worked and studied in Cairo, Egypt. And prior to living abroad, Ms. Garakian served for two years under Los Angeles Mayor James K. Hahn in the Mayor’s office of Economic Development.
Ms. Garakian received her Bachelor's degree from the University of California, Los Angeles and attended the American University in Cairo.
